How Important Are Hearing Tests?

There are a lot of questions that will be asked before and after the evaluation. Getting answers is a big part of why the evaluations are important for hearing health. Patients should be prepared to digest a lot of information about the results. Whether it’s good or bad news, it will be accurate and to the point.

An audiologist will be there to keep you from getting overwhelmed. The evaluation is not just about testing, but about educating the patient. Understanding your condition is the best way to beat hearing problems. When the patient is comfortable with the results, the audiologist will move forward with discussions about treatment. During this time, ask any questions if you feel unsure about the next step.

Diagnostic Hearing and Audiologic Hearing Evaluation

The diagnostic hearing evaluation can sound intimidating at first. Usually, patients start with a screening before moving on to the full evaluation. After the evaluation, the audiologist will fully understand your hearing capabilities in one or both ears. It’s not uncommon to have perfect hearing in one ear while the other has its own ups and downs. This is why the evaluation tests both ears equally to determine how severe the overall problem has become.

Your previous health history improves the accuracy of the evaluation, and is an expected step before moving forward. There are many things that can affect hearing that are not related to age. As an audiologist builds your profile, every bit of information helps in bringing the accuracy of your hearing evaluation to its peak.

Test Types

Pure-tone, bone conduction and speech testing are the three main tests you should expect. This is the minimum, so the actual tests required will vary for each unique individual. Pure-tone tests hearing at different frequencies while bone conduction uses sounds transmitted by vibrations. Speech testing identifies how well a person listens and repeats words. The culmination of all three of these tests will identify the type of hearing loss in one or bother ears. The three mentioned tests are combined with others to test the inner, middle and outer ears. Other possible tests include otoacoustic emissions, auditory brainstem response and tympanometry.
